• The Birth Story Listener

    Gabi Pezo

You gave birth and became a mother.

You had desires, expectations; you even had a birth plan.

You welcomed your baby into this world, and maybe, it wasn't what you thought it would be.

And now, you're left to navigate a sea of feelings and emotions that are new, conflicting, and maybe even scary. Everything you are going through is prevalent.

Most new mothers can't find someone they trust to tell their story, and those that talk about their wounds are meet with the deaf tone cliche: "At least you had a healthy baby."

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

    — C. S. Lewis

    What is it?

Pam England created Birth Story Listening after her challenging and unexpected cesarean birth. She has been refining this method, and she has taught it to women all over the world. We believe that storytelling holds a healing power that brings insight, clarity, and healing when the storyteller is given the space and ears to tell their story without being met with judgment, advice, or pity.

Birth story listening is a guided process where the storyteller doesn't relive the whole birth but focuses on the most crucial moment in childbirth and how she can make a new sense of what happened.

Birth story listening is not specific to women that had a bad or good birth, but it does focus on how the birth parent/mother/birth attendant/midwife feels about it.

*Birth Story listening is not psychotherapy or a replacement of therapy.

    About Me

    Hello friends,

My name is Gabi Pezo, and I love birth stories. When I was pregnant with my first child, I spent most of my time looking at reviews of baby items online and reading positive birth stories. I focused on being positive, and I believed that was all I needed to have a fantastic birth. Boy! Was I mistaken!

After my birth went haywire and all plans of an unmedicated vaginal birth were out the window, I experienced an incredible void. I felt there was no space for me to tell my story, and whenever I tried expressing my feelings and even my disappointment about how things went, I kept hearing the same words: It could have been worse, or my "favorite" At least you have a healthy baby. There was no place to tell my story, no one to listen, and I felt so alone.

Years later, I realized I had gone through emotional birth trauma and sought help.

During my second pregnancy, I discovered the work of Pam England from Birthing from Within and decided to take her course on Birth Story Listening. I continued mentoring with her. I have supported many women by giving them my undivided attention and guiding them in a self-discovery process where they come out changed.

It's my passion, pleasure, and privilege to hold sacred space for women to tell their stories after having a challenging birth.

People I've had the privilege to work with

    Nabeela

    Mom of 2.

“I have never tried therapy and did not ever understand the need to re-living the past and have maintained a forward-looking attitude, but when it came to my second pregnancy and delivery from day one, everything was influenced by the first pregnancy and delivery. Then came along Gabi, who helped me come to terms with my traumatic first birth by allowing me a comfortable - easy - non-judgmental environment within which to talk about and re-live my first birth was so difficult. Still, she helped direct my thoughts, which were all over the place, like my emotions. Gabi, I can never thank you enough for taking the time to help me!"

    Alejandra

    Teacher | Mom of 2

"When I started sharing my story, I realized that there were things that had really hurt me more than I thought. Gabi made the right questions at the right time. I felt validated, respected and heard. I enjoyed the process a lot. Thank you."

    Justyna

    Hypnobirthing Instructor and Yoga teacher

My birth experience of my first child was positive. However, they were aspects of my birth that bothered me. As a birth professional it was important to me to understand, resolve, and heal those issues. Gabi was very accurate when asking me questions to recognize my insights on why I felt that way. She helped me to understand how those aspects impacted me psychologically. She gave me tools to heal it, so I did not feel troubled anymore. Gabi enabled me to see other insights into my self and look at what was troubling me from a different angle. I would strongly recommend Gabi to any mum who wants to explore her fears in regards to birth but especially mums who feel traumatized by their birth experience. Gabi is an incredible listener and understands the psychological impact of childbirth.

Birth Story listening is a subtle yet powerful skill. Gabi is amazingly professional and compassionate; I so loved sharing my birth stories with her, confiding my weaknesses, and being able to receive love and understanding on another level was incredibly helpful and pleasant. Thanks, Gabi!

While talking to Gabi, I realized of the many moments I hadn't overcome from my first birth that was influenced the birth of my second son. Talking to her helped me recognized that although there were things that I need to heal, there were other things that I was doing right. This experience encouraged me to continue with my breastfeeding journey and eventually complete it entirely.
